Call-In to End AIDS

Date:

We won't stand for cuts to global AIDS programs, including PEPFAR — and Congress shouldn't either. President Trump is proposing a $300 million current year budget cut to slow the pace of HIV treatment scale-up, BUT Trump doesn’t make the budget, Congress does! On Tues 4/18, we must use the power of our voices to make sure Congress knows that their constituents demand increased funding for global AIDS, not cuts.

WHAT TO SAY
"Hello, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent. I’m concerned about the global AIDS epidemic. I’m calling today because President Trump’s plan to cut PEPFAR funding by $300 million this year will mean more people without access to life-saving treatment. It is morally wrong to let people die, and fiscally foolish to take steps we know will lead to millions of new infections. Will Senator/Representative ______ commit to rejecting a cut in global AIDS funding, and instead demand $700 million in increased funding for PEPFAR in order to close the funding gap and end the epidemic by 2030?"

IF THEY SAY THEY DO SUPPORT IT...
"That's reassuring. Please thank [Senator/Representative NAME]. Please ask [theSenator/Representative] to make a public statement to that effect. I would appreciate if you could follow up with me if there are any updates on this issue. I can be reached at [provide your contact info]. Thank you!"

IF THEY SAY MORE FUNDING IS NOT POSSIBLE...
"That's disappointing. I understand that the current fiscal environment is challenging, however slowing the global AIDS response will lead to millions of avoidable deaths and millions of new infections. I want [Senator/Representative NAME] to be able to at least guarantee that we will not slow down the rates of new people getting HIV treatment. Please remind [the Senator/Representative] that this is the moment to speed up the response, not slow down - we either invest now or pay forever. I would appreciate if you could follow up with me. I can be reached at [provide your contact info]. Thank you."
