Councilwoman Tracey Edwards co-sponsors resolution to spur economic growth by creating more affordable housing units
Huntington, NY- Councilwoman Tracey Edwards announced the approval of a resolution she co-sponsored with Councilwoman Susan Berland that seeks to spur economic growth in the Town of Huntington by promoting the creation of affordable housing for seniors, millennials and young families.
"Huntington is answering the call to provide more affordable housing. It’s been well documented that we have a long-standing affordable housing deficit for young people, seniors and young families. By enacting this new legislation, we’re addressing a very important issue that will also help our local economy. Creating affordable housing allows people to live, work, and spend their recreation time in Huntington and on Long Island,” said Councilwoman Tracey Edwards.
The resolution also calls contributions to the Affordable Housing Trust Fund when applicable that can provide loans or grants to first time home buyers. Another update will ensure that affordable units are substantially the same as market rate units in quality of furnishing, features, location and appearance.
"This was a long time coming for us to make some substantial changes for affordable housing especially for millennials,” Town board member Tracey Edwards, sponsor of the affordable housing resolution said. “I’m very proud and excited that we’ve taken this very significant step forward'.

PRIMARY DAY VOTER REGISTRATION
August 18 is the last day for a voter registration to be postmarked and the application must be received by the Board of Elections on August 23rd. The last day for filing application for change of address is August 23rd.
August 18 is the last day for in person voter registration to be eligible to vote in the primary election.
ABSENTEE VOTING FOR THE PRIMARY
September 5 is the last day to postmark application for a primary ballot.
September 11 is the last day to apply in person for a primary ballot and is also the last day for an absentee ballot to be postmarked it must be received by the Board of Elections no later than September 19th.
September 12 is the last day to deliver a primary ballot in person to the county Board of Elections.

New York State Single-payer Health Plan legislation
Nineteen states and the District of Columbia have already introduced legislation to establish state sponsored single-payer health insurance. In New York State the bill has already been passed by the N.Y. State Assembly.
Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci, the Republican candidate for Town Supervisor, voted against the NYS Single-payer Health Plan, apparently he doesn’t think New Yorkers should have reasonably priced health care.
You can support the initiative for the Single-payer New York State Health Plan which has already passed the NYS State Assembly and is only one vote short in the State Senate. You can e-mail, write or call your State Senator (Republicans Flannigan or Marcellino) and urge them to vote for Senate bill S4840 for the Single-payer New York State Health Plan for New Yorkers and contact Governor Cuomo and ask him to support the bill.

National Single-payer Medicare legislation
In recent months we have watched congressional Republicans contort into every imaginable shape attempting to repeal the Affordable Care Act and replace it with monstrosities that would benefit only the wealthiest citizens, big pharma and the health insurance industry.
It is time to end the charade in Washington and demand that our elected representatives support Single-payer Medicare for All. Private insurance is for accidents or unusual occurrences not health. Everyone needs health exams, gets sick, or injured.
Single-payer Medicare is the only system that is sufficiently cost effective to insure all Americans. By eliminating health insurance industry administrative costs and profits Public Citizen estimates a saving of $500 billion. That money can be put to work on behalf of those who cannot afford insurance and cover those who are under-insured.
Under a single-payer system medications will cost less, witness the fact that the Veterans Administration is able to negotiate a 40% discount for drugs and why in other industrialized countries, all of which have national health insurance programs, drug prices are significantly lower than ours.
Currently, the United States ranks shockingly low on the list of nations in quality of health yet we spend more per capita than any other country for health care. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has covered millions who did not have coverage before and slowed rapidly rising costs but more needs to be done. More than 30 million Americans still lack health insurance. Fairness demands that the richest country in the world provide quality health care for all as a basic right. A June Pew Research poll found that 66% of Americans think the federal government should be responsible for providing health care.
Under Single-payer Medicare most Americans will pay the same or less than they are now paying.
Under single-payer you will be able to see any doctor or go to any hospital in the U.S.
Currently, 14 members of the N.Y. Democratic congressional delegation support the Single-payer bill Sponsored by Rep. John Conyers Jr. of Michigan. Already, a majority of 116 members of the Democratic delegation have signed on in support. While it is unlikely to pass in the current Republican controlled congress it will establish a marker for the 2018 congressional campaign and send a message to the House Democratic leadership that the measure has strong grass roots support.
A campaign urging Single-payer Medicare for all will provide powerful motivation for voters to come out and vote Democrat in the mid-term election of 2018.
