Displaced; Conversation on Climate, Refugee Crisis & Immigration

Date:
Tuesday, May 9, 2017 - 6:30pm to 9:00pm
Long Island Action

We are currently experiencing the largest refugee crisis since World War II, and while there are many layers to what's unfolding, climate change is fueling the devastation. In the December issue of The Guardian, the chairman of the Global Military Advisory Council warned that climate change is set to cause a refugee crisis of “unimaginable scale,” calling global warming "the greatest security threat of the 21st century." A senior U.S. general stated that mass migration will become the “new normal,” adding, “There are direct links to climate change in the Arab Spring, the war in Syria, and the Boko Haram terrorist insurgency in sub-Saharan Africa.” His caveat: "Countries are going to pay for climate change one way or another. The best way to pay for it is by tackling the root causes and cutting greenhouse gas emissions. If we do not, the national security impacts will be increasingly costly and challenging.”

No one turned away for lack of funds.

Sane Energy Project invites you to a forum on how we can support immigrants as well as refugees abroad. The event begins with a segment of Outside the World, an immersive theater experience that places the audience in the shoes of refugees entering a camp. Then we'll hear presentations by climate scientists, immigration organizers and others, and conclude with an audience Q&A.
