Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said Friday that President Trump should resign, or, if he doesn’t, he should be impeached after a pro-Trump mob invaded the US Capitol Wednesday. A joint session of Congress was reviewing Electoral College votes that chose Joe Biden to succeed him.
“Let our Congressional delegation show this country that we still have reasonable leadership and principled leadership and say, yes, this President should resign. … Show that yes, there is some common sense left to government and some decency left in elected officials despite the crazy political times. And if you don’t, you will live with it. You will live with it.
“The question will always be, what did you do when Washington anarchy descended? What did you do when they were climbing through the windows saying six million dead Jewish people wasn’t enough? What did you do at that moment?”
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said Thursday, “The president is directly responsible for inciting the insurrection that transpired in our nation’s capital. He is just as culpable as the mob that attacked the rule of law, our democratic principles, and law enforcement. Therefore, I urge our members of Congress to support Senator Schumer’s call to invoke the 25th Amendment or begin impeachment proceedings immediately.”
He also said Friday, “We learned today that the mob that stormed the US Capitol also killed a police officer. This disgraceful attack on law enforcement and on our democracy is the responsibility of the mob and the elected leaders who have been lying to them for so long.
“The lying must end now. This election was not rigged or stolen. It is critical that elected officials, particularly those in Donald Trump’s Republican Party, stand up and tell that truth to their constituents. This is a moment of truth for our democracy.”
Huntington Democratic Chairman Frank Petrone said, “Like so many Americans we were appalled by the mob violence incited by President Donald Trump in our nation’s Capitol. He dared call those agitators, rioters, looters and Confederate flag wavers “special” and told them he “loved” them.
“We do not.
“We call upon every elected official on Long Island, especially those in the President’s own party, to join us in denouncing the deluded followers of this far-right radical movement that trashed the hallowed halls of our citadel of liberty on January 6, 2021.
“As President-elect Joe Biden said that day in Wilmington, “This is not dissent. . It’s chaos. It borders on sedition. And it must end.”
