Tom DiNapoli has held the role of state comptroller for more than decade. As the state’s chief fiscal officer and sole trustee of New York’s common retirement fund, DiNapoli has navigated through economic crises, stabilized and grown the pension fund, taken on public corruption, and shone a spotlight on agencies and municipalities through the auditing process, while managing an office of more than 2,700 employees to get the work done.

Family Court Judge Theresa Whelan beats Tara Scully in Democratic Primary

Democratic Family Court Judge Theresa Whelan won Thursday over Republican attorney Tara Scully in the Democratic primary for Surrogate Judge, setting up an intense general election rematch for the patronage-rich judicial seat.

Whelan, leading 65 percent to 35 percent with 98 percent of precincts reporting, thanked Democratic Chairman Rich Schaffer “for having confidence in me and my credentials.” She added: “I’m looking forward to presenting my credentials to the voters in November.”

A Scully campaign spokesman said she will have broad support in the general election.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo Easily Defeats Cynthia Nixon in New York Primary

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo took a decisive step toward a third term on Thursday, quelling a liberal rebellion by turning aside the insurgent challenge of Cynthia Nixon to claim the Democratic nomination in New York.

Mr. Cuomo had marshaled the support of nearly all of the state and country’s most powerful Democratic brokers — elected officials, party leaders, labor unions and wealthy real estate interests — to defeat Ms. Nixon, beating her by 30 percentage points.

The race cemented both Mr. Cuomo’s standing as an unmatched force in New York politics and a merciless tactician with little regard for diplomacy.

Huntington Town Board reinstates, creates and abolishes jobs

The Huntington Town Board reinstated, created and abolished several jobs at Tuesday’s town board meeting, again drawing criticisim from some members of the board over patronage and transparency.

The reshuffling included reinstating positions with salaries totaling $284,920, creating $272,413 in new jobs and abolishing $268,165 in positions.

According to town documents, $289,168 will be taken out of contingency to help fund newly created jobs.

The changes were listed in two resolutions sponsored by Republican Town Supervisor Chad Lupinacci. Both resolutions were approved in a 3-2 vote, with board members Mark Cuthbertson and Joan Cergol, both Democrats, voting no.
