The atmosphere was electric at the Larkfield Manor Tuesday night as Democratic town board candidates Supervisor Frank Petrone and Councilman Mark Cuthbertson, stepped into the limelight for another four years, this time joined by Tracey Edwards, who unseated Councilman Mark Mayoka to win a term on the town board.

In the race for Huntington’s highway superintendent, Peter Gunther, the Conservative-Republican candidate, defeated Democrat Bill Naughton, who has held the job for 25 years.

Petrone (D, WF), the supervisor for nearly 20 years, defeated Councilman Gene Cook (I, R, C) by 595 votes. A total of 36,547 were cast in the race, according to unofficial Suffolk County Board of Elections results.

Elwood, NY- Councilman Mark Cuthbertson recently announced a new pilot program at Elwood Park that offers Town of Huntington residents with a unique opportunity to exercise outdoors -- and have their friends or family join them.

“Not everyone can afford a gym membership, own or have the extra space for exercise equipment, but that should not prevent someone from working out and adopting a healthier lifestyle,” stated Councilman Mark Cuthbertson. “That was the idea for installing an outdoor fitness center at Elwood Park. "Spencer is running on his considerable record of achievements in his freshman term, especially on environmental issues. He was a key player in the recent partnership among the town, the county and a nonprofit group that preserved 27 acres of the former DeForest Williams estate in Cold Spring Harbor, a new model for conservation. Spencer was also a tireless advocate for $4.68 million in funding to upgrade the sewage treatment plant in Northport Village.

Huntington Democratic Ticket Picks Up Key Republican Endorsements
Three former Republican elected officials today threw their support behind Supervisor Frank Petrone, Councilman Mark Cuthbertson and Council candidate Tracey Edwards, saying the Democratic ticket was head-and-shoulders above their Republican rivals.

Paul Tonna, former Republican presiding officer of the Suffolk County Legislature, and former Republican town board members Donald Musgnug and Kenneth Christensen said that Petrone and Cuthbertson had done an outstanding job and deserved to be re-elected. Four years ago, the editorial board chided Huntington Supervisor Frank Petrone for coasting on past achievements. After 16 years, he seemed at times distracted and lacking energy. What a difference four years can make.
Petrone, 68, a Democrat from Commack running for a sixth term, is coming off what might be the best sustained performance of his long tenure.
His opponent is Eugene Cook, 51, of Greenlawn, an Independence Party member also running on the Republican line. Cook, who owns a construction company, says the town operates inefficiently. Review Set on Impact of U.S. Government Shutdown

The Town Board voted Tuesday night to ask the comptroller and town attorney to assess the financial impact the federal government shutdown and possible default.

After a short debate, the board voted 3-2 for the review; Councilmen Mark Mayoka and Gene Cook voted against it. Town Supervisor Frank Petrone urged the review, saying the town is owed millions of dollars from FEMA for Sandy and other costs.

"We've been using town dollars; all of a sudden we could have a cash flow problem," Petrone said. "We don't have a piggy bank. One alternative is to borrow, which is going to cost us." That move, however, could be months away, Petrone said.| read more ››

Black, Hispanic leaders launch Suffolk political effort

Black and Hispanic leaders vowed to unite for diverse political representation in Suffolk County as they launched a political effort within the Democratic Party Monday.

The newly formed Black and Hispanic Democratic Committee appointed co-chairs to represent the two minority groups and to hold seats in the Democratic committee that decides where to throw the weight of the party in local races.

It's time for black and Latino Democrats to realize that they have common issues at stake, said Assemb. Philip Ramos (D-Brentwood), who spearheaded the group's establishment.
